the soca revolution!

by Sarah
(London)

Hi there, I am writing my MA dissertation on ‘Enduring Resistance and Culture Building : The Caribbean Carnival in its local and transnational settings'....looking especially at trinidad carnival and UK off-shoot carnivals like Notting Hill. Obviously soca music is a very important aspect of carnival and can be seen as an extension of early chantwells or calypso styles...I wondered if anyone had any views or feelings about carnival as a form of revolution (heralding back to the slavery era of course), with lyrics being used as a form of message. I'd love any feedback from people! Thanks:)
