When talking about the best Calypsonians ever some names immediately come to mind, especially if one is a knowledgeable Calypso fan. These include the likes of the Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, Roaring Lion, David Rudder, Black Stalin, Lord Melody, Mighty Duke, Mighty Spoiler, Cro Cro, Mighty Chalkdust, Lord Brynner, Mighty Shadow, Calypso Rose and Lord Shorty. Of course there are many more and I have presented this list only as a teaser.

But how about YOUR thoughts? Who do you think are the best Calypsonians ever? We have great Calypsonians from the mecca of Calypso, Trinidad and Tobago but there are many greats from all over the Caribbean. Great Calypsonians have come from Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Barbados, Guyana, Dominica, Grenada, Antigua, and the list of islands goes on. Tell me who you think are the best ones to ever grace a Calypso stage.

Best Calypsonians

This is easy.THE MIGHTY SPARROW. He sings about every topic, he is the very best. Everybody gets something out of his listing of songs. There are some very educational songs, political issues, social comments. History teachers can use his songs for a lot of reasons. Women can learn what goes around in the heads of certain males and man can learn how they can be taken advantage off by the other sexe. Even male subjects that no man would discuss(willy dead). To me there is no one better. And on top of it the man has one big sence of humor. Nobody can top him!
And no I am not from Trinidad.

You beat me to it in starting this topic. I made my list and consulted with other friends on August 15th but did not submit my contribution until now.

In selecting my list of BEST CALYPSONIANS I considered the following:

1) Length of their productive career

Best Calypsonians Ever

No doubt, Mighty Sparrow has been the best ever, not only in Trinidad and the Caribbean, but all over the world, anywhere he went, he proved to be the best calypsonian ever born. Nowadays there are soca singers, but no more real calypsonians, like Sparrow, Kitchener and several others.

Lord Short Shirt (Mc Lean Emanuel)from Antigua is without a doubt one of the best calypsonians ever.Check the lyrics for his social commentaries,how the thoughts run deep into what happens in real life and dont forget his flowing melodies for jumpy tunes;remember he tore the entire calypso world apart with his road march tune Toursit Leggo in 1976.I guess it is because he is from what is called a small Island:Think of the recognition he would have if he was from Trinidad.

Lord Kitchener is by far the best; steelpan music, party tunes serious calypsoes; even after sparrow and other not singing kitch was still composing and singing; its only because he is gone that he is not singing but his spirit is in carnival.
