the world is either an Antiguan or has no idea about soca because Claudette peters song has no lyrics. Did you realise that she has one verse in a song and I am an Antiguan and I was there. The judges have this one right.

by: Crystal

I have no problems with the results except for one minor thing. I think that zoelah,s performance and song was way better than benjai and that should of at least given her 3rd place.
However at the end of the day. The judges decision are final. Congratulations to Faye ann and all the other performers. Job well done!!!

by: Socalover4life

It was obvious to everyone that Faye-ann had done it after her perfermances. I may be biased because I am a Faye-ann fan but I can tell you that I am also an Antiguan who cannot be biased to say that Claudette Peters had any place in this competition. I found Bunji was very electric but that's common ting. He always get a crowd to move.

I looked at the show and for the power... Fay-ann really did have the edge.. Was a bit disappointed in Iwer's performance.. he had no chance. Also for the Groovy Fay ann was also very good but I find that Zola should have come second... she was better than Shurwayne.. Also for a big international show... they could have gotten a BETTER SOUND system... to many contestants were complaining about the mic. Bunji sell out the sex of the baby, in his chant he say "she", so the cat out the bag...

Big up Faye-ann... I think she won fair and square..She had very little competition in the power soca monarch. However in the groovy, I believe Zoelah should have been placed 2nd.

faye ann did well! congrats . from the instant these songs were released they were winners but after the performance it was sure a thing. Her performance was great and bringing on her father was the best thing that she could have done. And she would take road march. only problem trinis like to sabotage grenadians too much, they must give us a fair and equal chance like the trinis. Grenadian artistes sabotage!!!!!!!!

I would have given Sherwyne for Groovy Monarch. His performance was really good and he usually has good lyrics. I wasnt all that impress with Fayon in the groovy competition.

In the Soca Monarch, I didnt see all the artistes, but I thought Sherwyne again was really good. Maybe I am bit bias, because I just love to see and hear Sherwyne perform.

I am a proud citizen of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and I am very disappointed in those results.... first I must congratulate Faye-Ann... for a pregnant Caribbean woman she does us all proud.... shows how far we "Caribbean" woman can go if we put our minds to it!! But VINCY sent in two top contenders SKINNY FABULOUS AND ZOLA... we are very excited about ZOLA's 4th place yes... but she was the talk of the town and deserved better!!!!
As to SKINNY FABULOUS... his non-placement is very disappointing across the Caribbean including here in St. Vincent... we are outraged!! He deserved better!!! He is up there with Faye-Ann and Bunji and you all know it too.... HEAD GAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I looked at the show from beginning to end I think that Zolah should have won the groovy soca monach.. Skinny had one of the best tunes but a very weak performance his performance in Vincy was better by far and the Intro was great. Fay an really mashed up the super blue song but hmm i wish she was not preggy to perform it then she would have get on. Khimal from Barbados who sang unleash Beast was funny. Big upsss to Zolah again gurl u hottt. One more thing the sound system should have been better by far for an International Show but all the artist were greattttttt.

by: Anonymous

What is the purpose of inviting all these other artiste Skinny Fabulous, Rikki T et al to a competition that is mainly based on crowd response. The Trinidadians did not support these guys at all even if some of them had some credible performances. Why invite the people to something that they no chance of winning in the first place.

To judge this thing, lets put it on neutral ground where BUnji and his wife cannot payoff people to come support them!!

Carnival
by: Anonymous

I think faye-ann was spectacular she went out there and did her thing it was like watchin MIA perform on the grammys. I don't think after her performance for power that anyone could have possibly expected to win 1st place in that segment. Well Bunji what can one say he had the crowd going and although the monarch is much about lyrics it is even more about crowd approval and that he definitely had. Well as for Iwer, i love his song so i'm just happy he made it in the top 3. Skinny was good but his performance could have been a bit more, his entrance was spectacular I was like wow a space ship can't wait to see the rest of the performance and after that it seemed to fall short some what and i think that's wat happenned he came out so strong and had you in anticipation and left u still waiting. But it's his first experience and I am sure it was a great one. Skinny did his thing to represent his country and Vincentians should feel real proud because their artists went out and really did their thing and showed that they could compete with the caribbean's finest. Well as for groovy i was a bit disappointed. I really expected zoelah to be in the top 2 because i thought her song was so ideal and faye-ann what can i say she is jus a diva she has soca in her blood. The show was great and oh the allison, saucy and destra performance was a great addition to the show really enjoyed that especially when destra started doing her old songs. CArnival season is back in full swing!!!

In support of all artists
by: Anonymous

What is the criteria for this competition?.....I'm not saying that the winner is not correct. If it takes the artist to bring on a Trini legend to get the edge then no artist from other islands can win this competition and if the crowd response plays such a big part it is obvious that the Trini crowd will not be supporting other artists. Alot of the artists had good songs last night and did perform well despite the fact that the crowd was obviously bias.

Claudette did not win that competition as in the comment from the world.....she sang well and performed well enough but i've seen that young lady put on a better show than that. Skinny did well...
In the groovy, big props to Benjai who did his thing all by himself and had the crowd with him.

I can see myself jumping and jamming to alot of those songs last night and others should have if they were really there for the party and music and not just to support only certain artists.

If it is the International Soca Monarch, this competition needs a more unbiased venue than in Trinidad

If people really understand carnival in Trinindad they will not make comments that Fayann and Bunji paid people for support. Hands down Fayann was power monarch. Bunji was excellent as well. It's too bad for the other islanders who had second rate songs and was in the finals because they were winners in their own country. You must have at least more than 1 verse to compete.
As for the groovy , I only got out of my seat for Kerwin DuBois and Benjai...loved it. Zoelah was great too but others were better. Congrats to the Queen.

We all know Bunji is a dynamic performer. He normally comes harder than that. Nobody can come tell me that Bunji did not perform lie down for his wife. No way Fay-Ann would have won if the real Bunji had shown up. Let her beat you fair and square when you are giving your all. He tone done his peformance last night.

Big up to the other singers they did well but it will be hard to win on a Trini stage.

by: Janelle

Faye-ann's performance for both categories was phenomenal by far. She sang true to the lyrics of her songs and was appropriately attired for a woman in her condition right now. When I first heard "Meet Super Blue", I knew she would take Soca Monarch and the Road March. I, particularly love "Heavy T Bumper" because it has a wonderful beat and it's very contagious. I had hoped that Zoelah would have placed second in the Groovy competition, I think she performed much better than Shurwayne. I, along with the crowd went crazy when the baby sang, it was pure genius. Conrats all the way Faye-ann, you most absolutely deserved them both. Ah know yuh takin road march too. Fuh sure!!!!!!!!!!!

Fayann won Power Soca
by: Anonymous

Fayanne won power soca hands down the performance was really good we can't take that from her. But i see people bringing down other artists because someone said theu believe that artist was better. I'm not Antiguan but i believe in fairness. I've seen Claudette Peters perform in numerous places and was in Antigua for her local competition and she was dynamite. I see someone thrashing her about her song is just one verse when this is so far from the truth and just listened to the winner's song and hers and they both have the same number of verses, just 2. Both songs have good bridges and hooks with very catchy choruses. So don't bash the artist's song when they are basically in the same league.

Fayann'e performance was just better last night and i believe maybe with a little more crowd support Claudette would have been more of a contender. The crowd was obviously bias. Not much support for the islanders.

All Trinidadians be fair...i am being fair....Fayanne won but she better be careful of people like Claudette because she did well despite the lack of support even the Tempo commentators etc admitted to that.

And besides when it comes to lyrics only one person ah de boss on that and that is Bunji.

Congrats to Fayann and better luck next time to the other contenders.

And next year please support all contenders. We will only elevate the art form even further.

In a country where every creed and race find an equal place, there are still some who object as is their right, the one good thing is that the artists did not judge themselves and a song cannot stand by itself with out a good strong performance. Congrats to the winners, those who did not win need to look back at the performances and make clear conscious decisions, well done all.

My 2 cents...
by: soca_addict

Be real....
Trinis will not hold back their exuberence for a song just because the singer form another country!!! If the song move mih i will wine!

Skinny Fabulous Song!!! real mash up...the airwaves...The performance!! I was there...and from the time they announced his name ppl were shouting 'from night til morning' etc. but by the middle of the performance the crowd had lost its interest...unless you were soca crazed like me, who was 'taking a jump on the spot' for the whole thing.

Berbice did not kill it. The only thing ppl know about the song is the word Traffic! and the lil ooohs and aaahs that Shurwayne sings in the remix...So they would be screaming the word Traffic and then be silent for the verses. Nothing against the man!

Zoelah....Love her...love the song!!! More than Shurwyane's and Benjai... But I think she is where she supposed tuh be. Faye-ann was going tuh get it. Real ppl like shurwayne song in terms of the video, the fact that Maxi Priest in it and he brought Maxi Priest on stage too...so he captured everybody in the crowd - the soca fanatics and the seasonal soca fans (those who really into dancehall etc). Benjai come on stage by himself...no props included and real move the crowd. And that song i think is an anthem for alot of ppl.

People (Trinis) do not KNOW who Claudette Peters is! That's all! (again unless who real down in yuh soca).

Honestly...the competition is being held in Trinidad...ppl going tuh react to what and who they know! Bringing icons of the culture onstage during the performance is just strategy... Who could the ppl from up the islands bring on stage to boost the TRINI crowd response?? Aliens and robots...

So i agree with the comment that the location should be international if it is the International Soca Monarch...but then i didn't agree from the start that the island artistes went straight to the finals just because they won their local competitions.

Or do the other islands want tuh open up their competitions to the region as well?

My view
by: Soca Lover

I love soca, my view is that if it is the International Soca Monarch then hold it at a venue that will not be biased and also it should be the winner from each territory that competes.
So in my mind now...Fay-ann won last night and then she will represent Trinidad in the International show....then i believe the other islands will have a fair shot cause they did have some good songs even though i didn't know half of them. To me it was just soca music didn't really care who the artist was.

International Soca Monarch???
by: Anonymous

What I did not like about this competition was that artists who were not from Trinidad were not respected. The word "International" needs to be scraped from the title. Last night Fay Ann Lyons won the 2009 Trinidad Soca Monarch. Artists from other islands were just guest performances. And did all you see how Destra mash up the place. I don't know whats stopping her from competing.

I agree
by: Disappointed

I agree with the comments about the artists who are not from Trinidad were not respected. How funny it is that when the Trini artists go anywhere in the caribbean they have the support there....even Bunji was a bit disrespectful when he sand the verse about we have some foreigners here but tell dem clear the road or something to that effect....to me they are saying that the other island artists are not welcomed to the competition so i do i agree that the "international" should be removed from this competition and just have a Trinidad Soca Monarch competition.

But congrats to Faye-ann on her win. She was creative with her performance even used her pregnancy, that much people thought would be a disadvantage for her, to her advantage.

by: Anonymous

When will de big bandit Munroe ever get it right. From the onset, the Groovy Competitors were at a disadvantage due to the HORRIBLE sound system (wha wrong with Davy and Frank et al, like Munroe eh pay all yuh or wha), to a band that was running dong the music for the groovy so that some of them came across as POWER. Benjai, Kerwyn Du Bois or Sherwayne should have won this -Zola was good, but she eh ready yet - some stage presence gyul. Guess that will come with experience.
Congrats to Faye Ann on the Power Soca. She milked the pregnancy and Super Blue to the Max. I have always felt that fear of a riot is what drives these results. Iwer should have been second. After sitting in the stands and looking at his performance and his appropriate stage props I felt yes. Then for Bunji to come and talk a set ah s**t, and be given second for no apparent reason. by: Anonymous

I just saw Fay-Ann's performance on YouTube. Of course, not having seen the whole show I will not comment on the placing. Her performance was ingenious with the use of her father and the baby singing part. I can see how she scored big with the home crowd. The song was well crafted for a competition like this in T&T but outside, I don't expect it to do well as it is too localised in construct. This may be deliberate since she is about to deliver her daughter and would be too busy to tour in the next year, anyway. An excellent performance nonetheless.

by: Anonymous

I think Zoelah performed much better than Benjai. She was my favoirite for the groovy title.

Iwer in 3rd place - dont agree. There were much better performances. If they really wanted to give it to a Trini - Blaxx was more deserving. Iwer needs to learn how to sing and stop this foolishness.

To award points on crowd response put the foreign artist at a disadvantage. this goes for any country such a competition is held

Skinny Fabalous really did not deliver his song well enough. I am so disappointed. Love that song.

Ricky T rose to the challenge extremely well. Faye Ann was a tough act to beat. But he delivered very well.

The foreign acts are all professional. Great performers and I think given the circumstance they did their best. Hats off. A non trini can never win the soca monarch in trinidad but it is good exposure for the artist from the other island.

The night belonged to Faye Ann. She was outstanding.

EVERYONE MENTIONED EVERYTHING ELSE , BUT NO ONE MENTIONED AIR PLAY FOR THE ARTISTE FROM THE OTHER ISLANDS ONCE THEY GET SELECTED FROM THEIR COUNTRY TO REPRESENT IN THE COMPETITION...IT SHOULD BE MANDETORY THAT ALL SONGS FROM SELECTED ARTISTE SHOULD BE PLAYED IN ROTATION AS EVENLY AS POSSIBLE TO ALLOW TRINIDADIANS TO GET USE TO THEM, SO ATLEAST THEY CAN BE EXPOSED TO THE SONGS.

THAT WILL MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE,I DONT THINK TRINIS ARE BIASED WHEN THEY LIKE A TUNE THEY LIKE IT.......CONGRATS FAYANN,,,,,,,

Artistes suffered largely from lack of airplay/familiarity
by: Mantius Cazaubon

Onlooker,

These are my thoughts exactly. The audience didn't know the songs of artistes like Ricky T, Claudette Peters and Luni Spark and Electrify. If the people don't know your power soca tune, it's almost pointless trying to compete.

One can more easily make an impression with an unknown groovy tune than a power soca song that has never been heard before. Although there are other factors for the poor response that the visiting artistes got, familiarity had a big part to play in this.

The same thing happens at the OECS now Caribbean Soca Monarch in St Lucia. The visiting islands do not get a good response no matter how good their song is, except if it's well known.

Nice discussion folks!

I just cannot for the life of me understand why the judges fail year on year to realist the talents of Blaxx. Blaxx brings music that is groovy to smooch with and include the right balance to chip or jump to. We've had "I am" followed by "Dutty" then "Breathless" and now "Tusty" - "I am dutty, breathless and tusty"! Yet no one gets the music nor the message.

And for those who seem to bashing Claudette Peters....she will be a force to reckon with....if the crowd was supporting non-trini contenders she would have been in the runnings for a position.

I'm trini and had the pleasure of seeing her perform outside of trinidad and she is good. Her performance was good on the night but i can say not one of her best but good despite the lack of support.

My fellow trinis don't bash what you don't know about....i just love soca and great talents are coming out of places other than our beloved trinidad. Give them a chance.....Can't wait too see next year's competition.

Grovy Soca Monarch or Calypso Monarch
by: Anonymous

I think we should be careful not to mix up Grovey Soca Monarch with Calypso Monarch when we compare Faye Ann's performance with Zolah's or any other performer's.

Regardless of how the points are allocated, hte song as a whole must be capable of making an impact on the audience in a party setting.

It should be noted that Groovy Soca is not just about slow romantic grooves or easy paced tunes. Its simply party songs that do not cross a particular beats per minute rate (b.p.m)

soca music is yuh identity
by: DK

You know as I sit here reading all the comments- one thing clearly comes to mind- the Caribbean is still as much divided as it was many years ago. Even the sweet sounds of caribbean soca cannot unite us. I'm shocked cause I can almost hear hatred from one islander for another islander as if we are not all caribbean people. I've lived in four caribbean countries, the shortest I've spent in a country is two years and you know we are all quite similar in many ways although we have our differences which should not serve to divide us but give us a sense of nationality. By the way Trinis- newsflash: YOU LIVE ON AN ISLAND!!!

Instead we bicker on blogs about who is better than who; who should have won a competition, whether judges are biased etc. The hard cold reality is this: soca monarch competitions all over have crowd response as one of the main criteria if not the main criteria. Wherever foreigners compete in a regional soca monarch competition, the local artistes will be favoured over the foreigners. I've been to soca shows in st.lucia, st.vincent, trinidad and barbados and I've seen foreigners with the exception of machel montano get luke warm reactions from the national crowds. People, that's just the cold hard facts and people should not chant down the trinis cause st. lucia has a regional show and the same exact crowd reaction occurs at that show when foreigners come on. I've been in Lucian crowds and heard some very disgusting remarks about foreign artistes at those shows.

If you really love soca music like me, once the song is mad you going mad too no matter what country it is from. We have to learn to appreciate the talent of our Caribbean artistes...we have to big them up each and every time....if they don't come good...we have to give them constructive criticism so that they can be better the next time so that we can be better entertained. If we don't do it, no one else will do it...cause other nations don't understand that soca is the pulse of the caribbean.

I want to big up all the artistes who performed at both shows. Thanks gals and guys for continuing to entertain us every year. Keep up the good work and I know we can only rise even higher from where we are now. I see our standards are improving each and every year and I know one day as Destra say...."Father finally you set the soca free".

Max it up to Fay-Ann- great performance, great vibes and looking forward to bigger and better in the future. Fay-Ann is only showing that women can do it all if that is the goal.

fayann,zoela.iwa and bunji
by: kedisha

my mother did her thing on fantastic friday nite.SHE MASH UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! her performance for both groovy and power soca was a blowen away one.zoela raised my paws when she came to do her thing .she had a rite to cut sherwayne tale in groovy bcuz his performance was POORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Zoela should have placed 2nd.iwa should have been on a page by himself bcuz he had no rite to place 3rd that was so wrong of those judges.he performed like real mess.my father had the crowd chaos he also did his thing. he went out to to put his wife on his shouler bcuz he came out very, very, simple and still any of those artist could have stood next to him NO BLOODY WAY.i'm so proud of both fayann and bunji ALVEREZ.THat baby was a blessing also no other than the man himself SUPER BLUE.that man still has it.also congrats to the alverez family on their young one and on their FANTASTIC performances.

TRINI BIAS ALL THE WAY
by: REd JAh

What is the point of inviting people to come to your country and you blatantly biased. Hold your local show and finish with that.
I saw the competition and anyone who saying that the crowd weren't biased need to check the weed smoke. International, yeah right.
All of you talk about Caribbean unity eeh. Let's be real man. At least don't be hiding. The woman win, fine. But don't tell me that there weren't better artists.

Trinidad Soca Monarch
by: Kerry-Anne

The Trinidad international Soca Monarch competition was fantastic, the results wre fairly okay, but I think that Benjai should have taken the Groovy Monarch title.Faye-Anne was off the chain in both competitions but Benjai had better crowd response,I guess she had the edge on him when it came to the props.Unlike every one else I don't think that Zoelah was a great as everyone said she was, yes, she has a great song, but her performance was not mind blowing.Skinny fabulous has a great song, but his performance was not great either.Bunji was awesome as always, and Blaxx should not have placed 4th.I think Patrice Roberts had a much better performance than him,and with a little more crowd response she would have beaten him.Iam from Grenada, and I think the results were fair, obviously Trinidadians will always have more crowd response, duh, but am not hatin.Trini artists big up alluh selves,u guys rock.Congrats Faye-Anne u deserve it gurl, big up urself Bunji,u had a great performance and Benjai u were also phenomenal.onarch
