St Lucia Carnival means a lot to me as a St Lucian soca artist. It's usually the time of year when I am happiest. I particularly like making a contribution with my music. As I type, I have a feeling of great anticipation and can't wait for Carnival 2008. There are many soca songs such as Lil Rick and Shurwayne Winchester's 'Can't Wait' which clearly encapsulate what I am feeling right now.
The dates for the actual 2008 Carnival weekend through to Carnival Monday and Tuesday is July 18-22.
Every year, in July, immediately after St Lucia carnival is over, yours truly begins putting songs together for the following Carnival. Truth of the matter is that I write all year round. I have no special schedule. I write when I'm inspired to do so.
The same thing goes for the many St Lucian artists who write and produce music for Lucian Carnival each year. St Lucian soca artists include Alpha, Ninja Dan, Kakal, Nicole David, Qpid, Papa Pops, Teddyson John, Ricky T, Nigel Nicholas, Marlon, Gary, Kakle, Platinum George and yours truly, Mantius. Leading Bands include Matrix, Wezon, Reasons, T.E.M. and Vertex.
But St Lucia Carnival is not only about soca music. Calypso music forms a major part of the annual festival. Leading Calypsonians include Invader, Educator, Mighty Pep, Tricky, Robbie, Lady Leen, Pelay, Bachelor, Lady Spice, Bingo, Minel and Wally, among many others. Every year, calypsonians battle for the much coveted Calypso Monarch title.
Saint Lucia carnival like other Caribbean carnivals is centered around a number of competitions. These include the aforementioned calypso monarch competition, as well as Soca Monarch, Caribbean Soca Monarch, the Road March Title, Inter-commercial House Calypso Competition, King and Queen of the Bands, Carnival Queen Pageant, Panorama and Band Of The Year.
Carnival music (calypso and soca) begins to play as soon as St Lucia Jazz is over. In fact, some artists begin to release their music sometimes as early as March, although not in large numbers. But as soon as Jazz is over in May, artists begin to "flood" the airwaves with new soca tunes. This leads to the official launching of st Lucia carnival which normally takes place in June.
I like St Lucia carnival partly because of the fact that there is so much to do around that time. One can never be bored. Every night there's an activity taking place, whether it's a Calypso tent, soca fete or show, or any of the major events like Panorama, Soca Monarch, and so on. Well as an artist I'm usually forefront in these events but I enjoy them just the same. Mas On The Square and Square Jam are two other popular carnival activities which take place on the Derek Walcott Square in the city of Castries.
The main event, the culmination of St Lucia Carnival is the parade of the bands on the streets of Castries on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Revellers parade in a wide array of elaborate costumes. A kaleidoscope of colour and sound! Carnival Bands include Cozy Guzzlers, Just 4 Fun, MAS Action, St. Lucian Spirit, XS Energy and Red International. To someone who has never experienced this, trust me, you've missed half of your life!
The Saturday before the parade in the streets, the Calypso Monarch competition takes place and on Sunday it's time for the Caribbean Soca Monarch competition where artists around the Caribbean battle for the coveted title. Immediately following the Caribbean soca monarch competition, carnival lovers gather in the streets of Castries, usually on the William Peter Boulevard, awaiting J'ouvert (Jour Ouvert). St Lucia's Soca Monarch competition takes place exactly a week before the Calypso competition.
St Lucia Carnival 2008 promises to be bigger and more diverse than ever before.
